About Us

Ark Energy has been founded with a vision and passion of exploring ‘unconventional’ answers for facilitating energy transition – electricity networks moving swiftly from conventional power generation, mainly based on fossil fuels to Renewable energy. Energy Transition to renewables is causing tremendous problems for grid stability and reliability given the inherently intermittent and unpredictable nature of renewable energy. These issues will magnify as world moves towards ambitious net zero targets, and renewable energy generation commands an increasingly larger share of the over energy generation mix.

Traditionally, supply side interventions have been proposed, and are being implemented to deal with these issues. Energy storage is also proposed as an ultimate panacea. However, depending solely on either supply side interventions and / or energy storage would increase cost of electricity supply to consumers, which can lead to tariff increases.

We at Ark Energy firmly believe that probably the biggest energy resource lies behind-the-meter at the consumer end. We have millions of equipment which can be curtailed voluntarily to save the grid from peak deficit and under-frequency. Similarly, we have millions of loads which can shift consumption to those times when renewable energy is at its best. We also have millions of home inverter – battery sets in homes and small offices which can act as a distributed storage system. Millions of households and C&I consumers have solar roof tops already installed, and coverage is fast increasing.

Ark Energy has a singular objective – leverage behind-the-meter energy assets – whether curtailable loads / shiftable loads / distributed battery storage and roof top solar to provide vital services to the electricity grid to maintain stability, reliability and enable increasing level of renewable energy inclusion, at lowest possible cost to the consumer. Not only that, we aspire to make millions of consumers active participants in the electricity industry – whether it is selling ancillary services or deviation balancing services or congestion relief services or participating in capacity markets.

One of the co-founders of Ark Energy, and its Chief Business Officer, Vipul Shah has been dreaming of demand response since past 20 years, when he included chapters of demand response, ancillary services and retail competition in his book “Understanding Competitive Electricity Markets” which was published by ICFAI Books in 2006.
